With Waybook's built-in testing features, it's easy to confirm your team has understood what they've read - whether you're writing your own questions or letting AI handle the heavy lifting.
Why Use Tests in Waybook?
Knowledge checks turn your training into a measurable, interactive experience. Use tests to:
Verify knowledge retention
Identify training gaps early
Drive accountability across your team
Track measurable learning progress
With Waybook, you can add tests at the end of and throughout your documents, making learning interactive and trackable.
Two Ways to Add Tests in Waybook
Both routes start the same way: open the document you want to test, then click New Step and select Test Step.
Create Manually
Choose your question type, write your own questions, and configure exactly how the test behaves. Best when you need precise wording for compliance, specific scenarios, or your own images and examples.
Create with AI
AI reads your document and suggests relevant questions in seconds. You can request the question formats you want, then review, edit, or remove any suggestion before saving. Ideal for onboarding and process rollouts.
Question Types and Grading
Waybook supports eight question types, so you can assess understanding in the way that suits your content:
Multiple Choice - the reliable classic, with image support and survey-style options
Dropdown - keeps long lists of options tidy
Fill in the Blank - tests key terms within their context
Match Answers - connects related concepts, definitions, or images
Order Answers - for sequences, priorities, and workflows
Short Text Answer - captures names, facts, and quick definitions
Long Text Answer - for explanations and reflections in their own words
File Upload - for screenshots, certificates, or practical work
Most question types grade themselves instantly. Long text answers and file uploads need a human review, and short text can go either way depending on how you set it up. Each question clearly shows whether it needs manual grading, so you can plan your review workload before you publish.
See Understanding Question Types for a full breakdown of each format and when to use it.
Configuring Your Test
You control how each test works for your team:
Pass rate - set the percentage based on how critical the content is
Progression requirements - decide whether people need to pass before moving to the next step
Question randomization - mix up the order between team members
Question subsets - show a different set of questions to each person
Reviewing Submissions and Results
Your team gets feedback as soon as they submit. Pass notifications appear in-app straight away, and fail notifications arrive both in-app and by email.
Anything needing a human review lands in your Submissions Manager, where you can grade answers directly and see which questions were scored automatically. You get a breakdown of every submission question by question, so you can spot exactly where someone excelled or struggled and follow up with the right support.
Waybook's reporting also makes it easy to see who has completed tests, track scores and pass rates, and monitor engagement trends across your team.
